Finding the Story — From NH—>NY—>NH Again
I never grew up thinking I would become a writer, and I’m still somewhat uncomfortable calling myself that. It feels like a big title for someone who just fell into storytelling in one way or another. But in helping people tell their stories, I’ve found my sense of purpose.
Some of my favorite writing assignments came from an editor asking me to cover a random person or what seemed like minimal news. I’d walk into a situation thinking, “what the hell is the story here? Is there even a story here?” But those have been the best discoveries, one where you can stay quiet, have a conversation, get to know a person, place, or conflict and realize they tend to tell their stories themselves. I just help put the pieces together. And so, I continue to look for the heart of a story—whether writing for a marketing team, newspaper, or even helping other authors tell theirs.
